Avoid making the mistake even more

One of my friends recently had her eight-year-old son help her out with something in her bedroom. Then she saw a small red smudge on her new carpet and immediately accused him of making a mess. Her friend put two and two together and realized that she didn’t actually see him make a mess; he was just in there with her. The next time your child comes home, don’t assume they made a huge mistake or got into something they shouldn’t have. Instead, take them aside and ask if they know anything about it. Chances are that they did it by accident or were even trying to help you out.

Make sure it’s actually lipstick on your carpet

Most carpet damage isn’t actually caused by lipstick. Lipstick is not likely to stain or otherwise harm your carpet, but things like ink, paint, pet urine and even some food stains can all cause problems for your carpet. If you’re not sure what’s causing your staining problem, try soaking a paper towel with water and rubbing it onto a test area of your carpet. If it comes out clean without leaving any color behind, then that means it’s probably not lipstick that’s causing damage. But if there is any coloring on the towel, then you’ll want to get out as much as possible before proceeding.

Cleaning products

Before starting, make sure you have some cleaning products on hand. Make sure they are either carpet safe or they won’t cause damage to your carpet.

Baby wipes

Lipstick is sticky, and it’s easy for it to get on carpets. If you’re looking for a quick fix, try using a baby wipe. Baby wipes are specifically designed to remove stickiness from just about anything. They can be used on food spills in your kitchen, sticky notes left by previous roommates on your bedroom walls and even lipstick! With babies in mind, many wipes are hypoallergenic and fragrance-free so as not to irritate sensitive skin or cause allergies. Using baby wipes shouldn’t leave stains behind like paper towels might.

Detergent solution

Fill a bucket with warm water and a cup of laundry detergent. Dip a clean cloth in, wring it out and use it immediately to rub off as much lipstick as you can. Then wash the area with cold water, repeating if necessary. If you notice any greasy residue after cleaning, treat it with an enzyme-based carpet cleaner or leave overnight and vacuum in the morning. Be sure not to use too much heat when drying it can set dye stains even further into your carpet fibers.

Vinegar

Red wine, Lipstick  and other colored liquors can leave dark stains on your carpet, which is why it’s best to spot-treat them immediately. Pour vinegar onto a clean white cloth and rub gently into stain until color is gone. Rub again with a clean wet cloth to rinse out vinegar residue. Soak up excess liquid with paper towels. Allow carpet to dry completely, then vacuum. You may want to place old towels under where you suspect there may be spills so that you can remove stains quickly and easily.

Rubbing alcohol + ice cubes

Cold temperatures can help solidify liquids, and rubbing alcohol is a type of liquid that will help remove lipstic and makeup stains. To use rubbing alcohol on your carpet, you’ll need some ice cubes and a clean rag. Pour a few drops of rubbing alcohol on an ice cube, then place it directly on top of your stain. Once the alcohol has frozen over, scrape it off with a razor blade or other sharp object. You can repeat as necessary until all traces of your lipstick are gone.

Vacuum up as much as possible

If you can, vacuum up as much of it as possible. If that’s not possible, blot (don’t rub) any remaining lipstick out with a dry white cloth and gently rub a few drops of dish soap on it. Wipe off with a damp cloth and blot dry with a clean towel. Even if some color remains, chances are your carpet will look far better than when you started and better than after using expensive remove-lipstick-from-carpet products.

Use an old toothbrush dipped in makeup remover

First of all, don’t worry. As you’re no doubt aware, lipstick doesn’t stain clothes or carpet. It washes out easily, but as it does happen it leaves behind a dark ring that can be hard to get rid of on your own. Here’s how to remove lipstick from carpet. First take a clean toothbrush and dip it in makeup remover (you can buy some at any drugstore). Then brush lightly over the stain with a gentle motion and watch as the stain begins to fade away until finally it disappears altogether.
